Field Service Parts Optimization at Seneca Companies

Seneca Companies, an automotive petroleum services leader with 75 field technicians and multiple stocking locations, faced a classic field-service stocking problem: how to equip each van and warehouse to sustain a 90%+ first-visit fix rate while avoiding excess inventory. Their prior one-size-fits-all van stock (~$35K each) left some items idle and a “zero turns” central warehouse pile of $400K; intermittent, spiky demand made traditional forecasting ineffective. To address this, Seneca engaged Smart Software and its Smart Inventory Planning and Optimization (Smart IP&O) solution.

Smart Software implemented its cloud-based Smart IP&O, integrated with Seneca’s JD Edwards ERP, to model intermittent demand and generate service-level–driven stocking policies for each technician and location. The change produced measurable gains: zero turns dropped from $400K to under $100K, first-fix rates exceed 90%, and total inventory fell from $11M to $8M (a $3M, >25% reduction), with initial improvements seen within 6–8 weeks.
