Chemical Manufacturer, Bedoukian Research, Uses SmartForecasts to Transform its Supply Chain Planning

Bedoukian Research Inc, a Danbury-based specialty chemical manufacturer that makes 350 products in small batches (many with intermittent demand), faced long 2–3 month sea lead times for Asian-sourced raw materials, short product shelf lives, and complex build-to-order planning where a single ingredient feeds many finished goods. A Smart Software customer since 1987, Bedoukian turned to SmartForecasts to generate accurate stocking-level estimates for both regular and intermittent-demand items and to improve its ability to meet high customer service targets.

Smart Software implemented SmartForecasts (integrated with the Chameleon ERP) to produce monthly, four-month demand forecasts and optimal raw-material stock levels, with plans to add Bill-of-Materials forecasting to simplify planning across product lines. As a result, Bedoukian automated intermittent-demand forecasts, improved stocking accuracy, and gained better sales-pattern visibility; sales rose 15% while finished goods inventory grew only 4% and raw materials 5%, late shipments due to insufficient stock fell from 16% to 3%, and consolidated ocean shipments plus fewer emergency airfreights saved over $1,000 per drum.
