Energy Management Immediately Saves Spar Supermarkets Energy and Costs

Spar SaveMor, part of the Spar Group in South Africa, wanted a clearer view of its energy, water, and fuel usage across its supermarkets, including how much electricity was imported from the grid, how well solar was being used, and what specific areas like the bakery, cold room, and administration were costing. The customer worked with vendor Smappee and its Smappee Infinity energy management system to get all of this data in one platform.

Smappee implemented Smappee Infinity with submetering and input/output modules to monitor electricity, solar production, water, paraffin/gas, and generator activity, while also enabling future load control. The results were immediate: a water leak was detected and fixed within hours, avoiding a large bill, and inefficient lighting changes are estimated to cut monthly consumption of 5,206 kWh by half. Smappee also helped identify that the store could eventually use a smaller, cheaper generator and laid the groundwork for further solar optimization.
