Marie Stopes boosts teen contraceptive access to 82% with Smaply

The customer, Marie Stopes Zambia, faced the challenge of traditional sexual health clinics being too intimidating for teenagers, leading to low access to family planning services and high rates of unplanned pregnancies and STIs. To address this, they collaborated with the vendor Smaply, using service design tools and approaches to understand the barriers.

Smaply helped implement a solution by creating the Diva Centres, which were designed as welcoming, judgment-free nail salons where girls could socialize and receive peer-to-peer education. This novel approach used fictional inspirational characters to represent contraceptive options. The results were significant, with the centres serving over 5,000 young adults. Measurably, 82% of teenage visitors received contraceptive services and 36% made a return visit, giving them greater control over their sexual health and futures.
