Case Study: LonMark helps McDonald’s achieve LEED Gold and energy savings with Small Box Energy

A Small Box Energy Case Study

Preview of the LonMark Case Study

LonMark - Customer Case Study

LonMark worked with McDonald’s owner-operators Tom and Candace Spiel as they rebuilt their Riverside, California restaurant to meet LEED Gold standards. Their challenge was to create a greener, more energy-efficient location that could reduce utility use, improve operational efficiency, and support sustainable building goals while still functioning as a busy restaurant.

Small Box Energy supported the project with an open, interoperable LonWorks-based energy management solution, including the Franke EMS platform for HVAC, lighting, metering, and kitchen equipment control over existing powerline and Free Topology wiring. The system helped the restaurant save about 8,950 kWh per month from its solar array plus another 2,870 kWh per month from efficiency measures, while also saving roughly 250,000 gallons of water and diverting about 283,000 gallons of stormwater in the first year.
