Grindr, a popular all-male social networking app with over 5 million users and roughly 10,000 daily downloads across 192 countries, was struggling with low eCPMs and ineffective monetization in international markets on its free iOS and Android apps. The team needed a way to boost ad revenue and better monetize global traffic.

Beginning in March 2014, Grindr added Smaato’s real-time mobile ad exchange and mediation platform, opening international inventory to Smaato demand and running 320×50, 728×90 and 320×480 units. Leveraging Smaato’s global scale, granular geographic floor controls and hands‑on account management, Grindr saw an average 35% increase in eCPMs across formats, strong revenue gains on image and rich media ads, and 320×50 emerging as the top-performing unit on both iOS and Android.
