Versorgungsbetriebe Bordesholm, a public utility company, sought to provide a primary control reserve for the European utility grid while also ensuring a completely secure, 24/7 electricity supply for its region in the event of a grid failure. To meet this challenge, they partnered with SMA Solar Technology and implemented its SMA Large Scale Energy Solution.

The solution from SMA Solar Technology utilized seven Sunny Central Storage battery inverters and an SMA Hybrid Controller XL to create a 15-megawatt storage system. This system automatically supplies balancing energy to stabilize the grid and can form a stand-alone grid within seconds during an outage, supplying 100% renewable energy. The results include a lucrative business model providing primary control reserve and a proven ability to power 8,000 residents without interruption during a simulated hour-long blackout, setting a milestone for the energy transition.
