Preview of the Tonga Power Ltd Case Study

Tonga Power Ltd cuts diesel use by 225,000 liters a year with SMA Solar Technology

Tonga Power Ltd, the operator of the electricity supply for the Vava'u island chain in the Kingdom of Tonga, faced the challenge of high energy costs and emissions from its reliance on diesel generators. With assistance from SMA Solar Technology, they implemented a photovoltaic diesel hybrid system utilizing SMA Sunny Tripower inverters and an SMA Fuel Save Controller to harness solar energy and reduce diesel dependency.

The solution implemented by SMA Solar integrated a 500 kW solar farm with battery storage into the existing diesel grid. This hybrid system provides up to 70% of the island's energy needs at peak sun and significantly cuts diesel consumption. The project achieved substantial results, including an annual diesel savings of 225,000 liters and the generation of 695 MWh of solar power per year.
