Case Study: Reao Atoll achieves clean off-grid power with SMA Solar Technology

A SMA Solar Technology Case Study

Preview of the Reao Atoll Case Study

Reao Atoll cuts diesel use with SMA Solar Technology and avoids approx. 365 tonnes of CO2

The remote atoll of Reao in French Polynesia, home to 324 residents, faced a costly and polluting energy challenge. It relied on 250 liters of diesel daily for noisy generators, primarily to power copra processing. SMA Solar Technology provided an off-grid and hybrid power solution using its Sunny Island inverters and Multicluster Box to address this.

The solution implemented by SMA established a large-scale solar stand-alone grid. This system, easy to install and maintain by local technicians, now supplies quiet, emission-free solar energy, relegating diesel to emergency use. The result was an annual CO2 reduction of approximately 365 tonnes and a significantly improved quality of life, including better healthcare conditions. The success inspired several neighboring islands to adopt similar solar technology from SMA.
