Case Study: Emirates achieves hybrid off-grid desalination in Dubai with SMA Solar Technology

Emirates produces 50 cubic meters of drinking water with SMA Solar

The customer, Emirates, needed to power a desalination plant at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park with a reliable hybrid electricity source. SMA Solar Technology provided a solution using its SMA Multicluster Box system and Sunny Island battery inverters to manage the complex energy supply.

SMA Solar implemented a system combining a 100 kWp photovoltaic array with 520 kWh of daily battery storage. This solution allowed the plant to operate primarily off-grid while seamlessly connecting to the grid for backup and to export excess energy. The project successfully generates 200,000 kWh of clean energy annually, producing 50 cubic meters of drinking water while saving 160 tons of CO2 per year.
