Case Study: ARNO-Werkzeuge achieves improved coolant delivery and longer tool life with SLM Solutions additive manufacturing

A SLM Solutions Case Study

Preview of the ARNO-Werkzeuge Case Study

World’s first additively manufactured series turning tool for the cutting industry

ARNO-Werkzeuge, a manufacturer of high-quality cutting tools for turning, grooving, drilling, and milling, needed a way to create a lathe tool with internal, flow-optimized cooling channels that could deliver coolant precisely to the cutting area. Conventional manufacturing methods could not produce the required nozzle-shaped internal geometries, so the company turned to SLM Solutions and its selective laser melting technology.

SLM Solutions enabled Rosswag Engineering to produce the function-optimized lathe tool on an SLM®280 TWIN using maraging steel 1.2709. The additively manufactured design improved coolant targeting, reduced overheating and chip jams, increased process safety, and extended tool life while lowering coolant usage. The part was successfully manufactured as a series tool and made available through ARNO Werkzeuge, demonstrating a practical production application for metal additive manufacturing.
