New business ideas through 3D-Printing using the example of spare parts supply

Rolf Lenk Werkzeug- und Maschinenbau GmbH, a family-run German tool and machine manufacturer, wanted to expand beyond traditional machining and address a growing customer need: reproducing spare parts when no construction drawings were available. After an early collaboration with SLM Solutions, the company saw the potential of metal additive manufacturing and began exploring 3D-printed parts and prototypes for small-series production.

SLM Solutions provided SLM® selective laser melting systems, including the SLM®280 and SLM®500, enabling Rolf Lenk to scan damaged parts, rebuild CAD data, and manufacture replacements in aluminum alloy. For example, a Cadillac Eldorado control box cover was recreated in 75 hours for the first unit and 55 hours for subsequent parts. With SLM Solutions’ technology, Rolf Lenk opened new business areas, improved product optimization, and gained a viable approach to spare-parts production even without original drawings.
