3D printing in tool construction and die-casting

Oskar Frech GmbH & Co. KG, a world leader in die-casting machinery, needed a way to improve tool construction and die-casting performance through industrial 3D printing. Working with SLM Solutions and its SLM®280 metal additive manufacturing system, the company focused on conformal cooling inserts for die-casting molds made from tool steel 1.2709.

SLM Solutions enabled Oskar Frech to produce cores, wipers, and anvils with internal cooling channels tailored to each part’s geometry. The result was a cooling time reduction of about 60% from 12 seconds to 5 seconds, a cycle time reduction of more than 12%, improved part quality with no material defects, and additional benefits such as less mold release agent and longer mold service life.
