Mission College, a public two-year community college in Santa Clara serving many first-generation students, faced a persistent challenge: students were being dropped for non-payment because they missed enrollment and billing deadlines. To reach students of all ages quickly and reliably, Mission College partnered with SlickText to use its text messaging platform for urgent alerts, scheduled reminders, and two-way support.
Working with SlickText, Mission College started with single text blasts and evolved to scheduled weekly messages six weeks before deadlines, added two-way messaging, and expanded outreach to applicants who hadn’t registered. The results were significant: an initial pool of over 1,000 students who could have been dropped was reduced to 400 by the semester start, subsequent campaigns cut the number of students owing money by half, helped more than 2,100 students pay obligations in 2020, and reduced overall debt by $450,000.
