World’s First In-Lateral Real-Time Well Cleanup in Multilateral Well, Saudi Arabia

Saudi Aramco worked with SLB to improve cleanup and reservoir management in a multilateral extreme reservoir contact well in Saudi Arabia. The company needed better control and monitoring of each lateral compartment to optimize well cleanup, manage drainage, and handle changing pressures, water cuts, and flow regimes in a heterogeneous carbonate reservoir.

SLB deployed the Manara production and reservoir management system with in-lateral sandface monitoring and control across six stations in the tri-lateral well. The system enabled real-time adjustments during cleanup, recovered all brine before production, and balanced contribution across all laterals, completing an operation that could have taken weeks or months in just 12 hours at no additional cost and without interrupting production.
