Vista Oil & Gas Saves 2.5 Days Drilling the Curve and Achieves Longest Slimhole Lateral, Neuquén Basin

Vista Oil & Gas was drilling in the Neuquén Basin in Argentina, where the Quintuco and Vaca Muerta formations contain highly interbedded, fractured rock and high reservoir pressure that can cause severe shock, vibration, and poor directional control. To address these challenges, SLB recommended the PowerDrive Orbit G2 vorteX motorized RSS for the curve and lateral section.

SLB deployed the PowerDrive Orbit G2 vorteX motorized RSS to improve dogleg severity, reduce tortuosity, and maintain directional control while drilling the 61/8-in section in a single run. The solution cut 2.5 drilling days from the curve, reduced shock and vibration by 92%, lowered CO2 emissions by 57 metric tons, increased average ROP by 133% in the curve and 54% in the lateral, and helped Vista Oil & Gas achieve a record 3,025-m slimhole lateral with 100% footage in the pay zone.
