Vista Oil & Gas Drills Shoe to Shoe in a Single Run Through Interbedded Formation, Onshore Argentina

SLB worked with Vista Oil & Gas on a challenging horizontal well in the Medano de la Mora Field in onshore Argentina, where interbedded, fractured formations, narrow mud-weight windows, high vibration, and temperatures up to 145°C made drilling the curve and lateral risky and time-consuming. The operator needed to reduce well time, avoid unplanned trips, and improve drilling performance in a complex shoe-to-shoe production section.

SLB proposed an integrated BHA combining a DynaForce high-performance drilling motor with a PowerDrive Orbit G2 rotary steerable system, allowing Vista Oil & Gas to drill the 6⅛-in production section shoe to shoe in a single run. The result was a savings of 2 drilling days, 3,568 m drilled with excellent directional control, average ROP of 22.8 m/h and peaks up to 71 m/h, 180 pumping hours at 145°C, and a reduction of 46 metric tons of CO2.
