Vår Energi Saves Millions with Industry’s First Subsea Retrofit Multilateral Wells

Vår Energi, working with SLB, needed to boost production in the mature Goliat Field in the Barents Sea while avoiding the cost, delay, and infrastructure requirements of drilling new subsea wells. The existing subsea templates had no open slots, and the company wanted a way to reach new reservoirs in challenging arctic conditions without adding major new facilities.

SLB recommended and deployed the RapidX TAML 5 high-strength, hydraulic-sealed multilateral junction with an intelligent completion as a subsea retrofit, converting two single-bore wells into multilateral producers with independently controlled branches. The project delivered access to an estimated 7 to 8 million bbl of oil, saved millions in capex and time, and is estimated to have avoided 5,000–10,000 t of CO2e emissions by eliminating the need for two new subsea wells and associated infrastructure.
