Vankorneft Increases ROP 12%, Completes 1,194-m Sidetrack in Single Run Eastern Siberia

Vankorneft worked with SLB to improve well trajectory and dogleg severity while maintaining high rate of penetration on sidetracks drilled in eastern Siberia. The company needed better angle buildup and directional control in high-angle wells, especially on two sidetracks drilled in the same well on separate runs.

SLB recommended the PowerDrive X6 rotary steerable system and used the IDEAS integrated drillbit design platform to customize a Smith PDC drill bit for the application. The optimized bottomhole assembly increased average ROP per section by 12%, drilled a 1,194-m sidetrack in a single run, and improved dogleg severity to 5°/30 m, a 40% gain over the original BHA.
