US Department of Energy and ADM Optimize Carbon Sequestration Using Multizonal Intelligent Completion

SLB helped the Illinois Industrial Carbon Capture & Storage Project, administered by the U.S. Department of Energy and supporting ADM’s ethanol facility in Decatur, Illinois, address the challenge of safely injecting and monitoring more than 2.5 million metric tons of CO2 over three years in a deep subsurface storage formation. The project required reliable well construction, geologic modeling, and real-time visibility into injection behavior and reservoir conditions.

SLB implemented a five-zone intelligent completion in the monitoring well, a completion in the injection well, and Optiq fiber-optic cables for distributed temperature and acoustic sensing, along with remote control through a WellWatcher Connect data system and hydraulic power unit. This enabled real-time monitoring, remote actuation of flow control valves, leak detection, and fluid sampling with zero non-productive time, while optimizing sequestration of over 2.5 million metric tons of CO2 and giving ADM confidence to plan a second carbon sequestration project.
