Preview of the Unit Petroleum Company Case Study

Unit Petroleum Company Boosts ROP 27% in Intermediate Section Targeting the Granite Wash

Unit Petroleum Company was drilling the 8¾-in intermediate section in the Texas portion of the Anadarko basin and wanted to improve rate of penetration while reducing torque through interbedded shale, sandstone, and limestone above the Granite Wash. SLB, through Smith Bits, provided the AxeBlade ridged diamond element bit to support faster drilling in this directional application.

SLB deployed the AxeBlade bit, which was selected to improve cutting efficiency and toolface control compared with the previous premium PDC bit. In the Mahler 108-1H well, Unit Petroleum drilled the interval in a single run at 95.54 ft/h, 27% higher ROP than the offset well, while generating 20% less surface torque and saving 14.75 hours of rig time.
