Turbodrill BHA Saves Operator Nearly 2 Days and USD 4 Million Offshore Oman

SLB worked with Offshore Oman Operating Company to improve drilling performance in a long 12¼-in tangent section of an offshore appraisal well in Oman. The section had to stay on a 42.6° trajectory while drilling through hard claystone, shale, and limestone, and previous BHAs using PDC and TCI bits with motors or RSS had delivered poor performance, often below 2 m/h.

SLB recommended a 9½-in T112HF steerable Neyrfor Traditional turbodrill with a 12¼-in impregnated hybrid bit, supported by stabilizers to hold the planned well path. The system drilled 250 m at an average 4.7 m/h, 88% faster than the previous RSS interval, and helped save nearly two days of drilling time and about USD 4 million while maintaining trajectory.
