Total Eliminates Bit Run with OptiDrill Service in 17½-in Section in North Sea

Offshore Field Development Company worked with SLB to drill a 17½-in section in the North Sea from a 20-in vertical casing to section TD in a single run. The challenge was to manage interbedded, higher-strength formations and avoid the extra bit run that had been needed in offset wells, while maintaining the planned well trajectory and limiting drilling risk.

SLB recommended the OptiDrill real-time drilling intelligence service with PowerDrive X6 RSS and a roller cone bit, supported by prejob modeling in the IDEAS platform. The well reached TD in one run, eliminated the second bit run, improved overall section ROP, and delivered a smooth wellbore; the OptiDrill service also helped detect and mitigate brief bit bounce and confirmed low lateral motion in the BHA.
