Synapse service data increases ROP 30% and more than doubles footage

SLB worked with a major operating company in the Permian Basin to address drilling challenges in a hard chert interval of a vertical section. The operator needed better insight into downhole drilling dynamics to reduce repeated bit trips, severe bit wear, and lost teeth while drilling a 7,000-ft measured-depth section.

Using SLB’s Synapse performance insights and optimization service, the operator analyzed downhole shock, vibration, rpm, and temperature data from two BHA runs to refine drilling parameters. SLB’s postwell analysis led to a more aggressive bit and optimized rpm and WOB, resulting in 30% higher ROP and footage increasing to more than 4,000 ft from 1,800 ft, while also reducing shock and improving drilling efficiency.
