Suite of LWD Services Enables Full Characterization of Reservoir in South China Sea

SLB worked with China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) to drill pilot and horizontal production wells in a highly heterogeneous coral reef reservoir in the South China Sea. The main challenge was placing wells accurately in the target layer while also collecting enough reservoir characterization data to optimize development and maximize oil production.

SLB deployed a suite of logging-while-drilling services, including geoVISION imaging-while-drilling, adnVISION azimuthal density neutron, and arcVISION array resistivity in one well, along with petrotechnical interpretation support. This enabled real-time geosteering, identification of fractures, and full characterization of reservoir heterogeneity, including secondary porosity and productivity controls. As a result, CNOOC obtained the measurements needed to place the wells correctly and improve its development plan, and later chose to use the same SLB services in two additional horizontal wells.
