Subsea Safety Systems Enable Rapid Disconnection from Well Following Unexpected Rig Power Outage

SLB worked with a leading deepwater well company that needed to rapidly disconnect the landing string from a well during an unexpected power outage in a deepwater exploration well test. The operation was taking place in more than 1,500 m of water with strong currents and a live gas well flowing hydrocarbons, creating a high-risk situation as the rig began to lose power and drift.

SLB used the IRDV intelligent remote dual valve and the SenTREE 3 subsea test tree to close the test valve, bleed off pressure, and disconnect the landing string. The well was successfully shut in and the landing string and LMRP were disconnected without environmental incident, and the original tool was relatched on the first attempt after about 5 days off the well, allowing testing to resume without damage to the equipment.
