Stinger Element Saves 6 Days in Parque das Baleias Presalt Field Offshore Brazil

Petrobras needed to drill the entire reservoir section of a presalt carbonate reservoir offshore Brazil in a single run while reducing the number of bits used. SLB, through its Smith Bits line, was selected to help improve drilling efficiency, reduce NPT and drilling costs, and maximize rate of penetration in a high-UCS formation.

SLB designed a fit-for-purpose 8.5-in PDC drill bit with a central Stinger conical diamond element to improve durability, reduce vibration risk, and increase ROP. The first well drilled 437 m at 6.7 m/h, improving ROP by 65% and cutting cost per meter by 47%, while the second drilled 646 m at 6.4 m/h, improving ROP by 57% and reducing cost per meter by 51%; together, the two runs saved more than 6 rig days.
