Case Study: PEMEX saves 1.7 drilling days with SLB’s StingBlade bit

StingBlade Bit Saves PEMEX 1.7 Days Offshore Mexico

PEMEX was drilling the Middle Kretacic formation offshore Mexico and needed to improve rate of penetration and drilling footage while reducing bit trips in very hard, abrasive carbonates with chert nodules and high temperatures. SLB, through its Smith Bits line, addressed the challenge with the 8½-in StingBlade conical diamond element bit.

SLB recommended the StingBlade bit and optimized the cutting structure using the IDEAS integrated design platform to maximize performance in the harsh formation. The bit drilled 125 m at an average ROP of 2.24 m/h, completed 94% of the formation in one run, reached 15 m/h when stick/slip was absent, and saved PEMEX 1.7 drilling days.
