StingBlade Bit Saves an Estimated USD 300,000 by Improving ROP 51% in Colombia

Amerisur Resources was drilling through the challenging Pepino Formation in Colombia’s Putumayo basin, where thick conglomerate and claystone layers were causing severe high-impact damage to PDC bits, premature bit ringout, and low ROP. SLB supported the operation with a StingBlade conical diamond element bit and the M-I-SWACO KLA-SHIELD enhanced-polymer water-based fluid system.

Using the SLB StingBlade bit and KLA-SHIELD fluid system, Amerisur Resources drilled 1,741 ft in the 8½-in section, boosting ROP from 46 ft/h to 70 ft/h, an improvement of more than 51%. The run cut drilling time by 22.5 hours, saved an estimated USD 300,000, reduced cutter damage, and delivered a better bit dull condition than the offset PDC bits.
