A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with Field Offshore Operating Company offshore Russia, where the operator needed to enlarge an 8½-in borehole to 12¼ in through a directional well with high dogleg severity and interbedded sandstone and clay. The challenge was to manage shock and vibration, avoid sticking and twistoff, and maintain drilling performance while opening a 610-m interval in a difficult well profile.
SLB customized a staged hole opener reamer BHA using the IDEAS and Drilling Office software platforms, then managed the job with a DrillMAP plan and PERFORM Toolkit monitoring. The customized SHO reamer BHA completed the enlargement in a single run, eliminating one trip out of hole and saving 2 days of rig time and planned AFE, while reaching TD successfully with low postrun dull wear.
