Specialty Bit Helps BP Exceed ROP Expectations by up to 100 Percent, Oklahoma

BP worked with SLB to drill an 8¾-in curve section into the lateral in a single run while improving rate of penetration over nearby offset wells. The main challenge was maintaining the planned build rate and directional control through difficult formations, especially the Woodford Shale, without changing bits.

SLB proposed a customized specialty PDC bit designed for high dogleg severity, good toolface control, and steerability, using offset data and bit optimization tools to refine the design. The bit delivered strong directional performance, reached the targets in one run, and improved ROP by 63% and up to 100% versus baseline TCI bits, while achieving DLS as high as 12° and in some sections nearly 16°.
