A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with Field Offshore Operating Company to address the challenge of acquiring high-quality formation data in a complex appraisal well offshore Australia, where soft unconsolidated sediments in the upper section and deeper reactive shale created risks such as washouts, instability, and poor logging quality. The company needed reliable acoustic measurements before formation and wellbore damage could compromise wireline logging and reduce confidence in field development decisions.
SLB recommended and deployed the SonicScope 900 multipole sonic-while-drilling service, together with arcVISION array resistivity measurements, in the 16-in section. The solution delivered high-quality, real-time acoustic data throughout the entire interval, including unique leaky compressional processing in the washout-prone upper zone, and enabled the operator to drill at up to 245 m/h, more than double the planned rate of 100 m/h. SLB’s service also achieved the world’s first SonicScope 900 run in a 16-in section and provided data that helped define geomechanical limits and improve future well path design.
