SonicScope 675 Service Identifies Gas Reservoir Using Real-Time Compressional and Shear Measurements

SLB worked with Southeast Asia Deepwater Drilling Company to drill and evaluate a deepwater well in a very slow clastic formation. The customer needed accurate time-depth information, real-time pore pressure monitoring, and validation of surface seismic data while confirming reservoir fluids, but conventional sonic tools struggled because of severe signal attenuation in the slow formation.

SLB recommended the SonicScope 675 sonic-while-drilling service, using monopole low-frequency Leaky-P processing and quadrupole shear measurements. The service delivered reliable continuous compressional data as slow as 220 us/ft and shear data as slow as 460 us/ft, accurately tied the well to surface seismic, and helped confirm a gas reservoir through VP/VS crossplots.
