Sinopec Uses PowerDrive Archer RSS with Near-Bit GR Imaging to Steer Drilling 100% in Pay Zone, China

Sinopec needed to maximize shale recovery while drilling two horizontal exploration wells in the Dingye field, where the thin 2–3 m pay zone had gamma ray responses similar to the layers above and below. SLB supported the project with PowerDrive Archer high build rate rotary steerable system (RSS) technology and near-bit gamma ray imaging to improve well placement in the narrow reservoir.

SLB and Sinopec used the PowerDrive Archer RSS to enable real-time geosteering and precise directional control, helping the team stay in the target zone throughout drilling. The result was 100% reservoir contact across two lateral sections measuring 1,234 m and 1,556 m, and a total of 2,790 m drilled within the thin pay zone, with maximum dogleg severity held to just 3°/30 m.
