A SLB Case Study
Kuwait Oil Company needed to replace its legacy two-trip completion approach with a single-trip method for a cost-sensitive deepwater brownfield in offshore Africa. The goal was to set two packers independently so drilling mud could be circulated out through a sliding sleeve before the upper packer was set, but most suppliers could not support the required setting sequence. SLB provided the BluePack Max RH retrievable hydraulic-set production packer to help meet this challenge.
SLB recommended using a BluePack Max RH packer with a customizable setting pressure as the upper packer, paired with an MRP conventional packer below, and equipped the upper packer with a hydrostatic setting trigger. This allowed the operator to remove mud, replace it with completion brine, and complete each well in a single trip. Four wells were completed using this method, reducing average completion time to 4.5 days from 15 to 17 days and saving about USD 2 million per well, or roughly USD 8 million in total.
