Single MD-2 Effectively Takes Over for Dual Shakers

An international drilling contractor was preparing to drill a 22-in wellbore in the Eagle Ford when the two competitor shakers on the rig could not cost-effectively meet the aggressive drilling requirements. As a result, penetration rates would have been limited and waste haul-off costs would have been too high. SLB, through M-I SWACO, was brought in to provide a better solids-control solution.

SLB recommended replacing the two existing shakers with a single M-I SWACO MD-2 dual-deck shaker with composite screen technology. The MD-2 handled 100% of the flow through the top-hole section, processing 658 gpm at 60% screen coverage on the primary deck and a zero-degree deck angle, compared with the competitor shakers’ 164 gpm at 75% coverage and a 4.5° angle. This allowed the contractor to maximize flow rate, achieve the desired ROP, and reduce haul-off costs appreciably.
