Simultaneously Producing Oil and Injecting Water Saves KOC at Least USD 4 Million

Kuwait Oil Company worked with SLB to address rising drilling and completion costs for water injection needed to maintain pressure in depleting reservoirs in North Kuwait. The challenge was to reduce the expense of dedicated injector wells while sustaining oil production from mature fields, using a completion approach that could support both production and injection in the same well.

SLB engineered a modified dual concentric ESP completion system that enabled oil production from one zone while simultaneously injecting water into another zone in the same well, with flexible configurations for either zone arrangement. The first systems were installed in 2017 and ran successfully in multiple wells; the ESPs held stable production at about 2,300 bbl/d before injection began, and injecting water into the first two wells did not harm the ESP or oil output. By eliminating separate injection wells, SLB helped Kuwait Oil Company save about USD 2 million to 2.5 million per well, for at least USD 4 million in total savings.
