Significant Reduction of Ultrafines in Synthetic-Based Mud Leads to Successful Mud Recovery

SLB worked with a synthetic-based company in Argentina that wanted to recover synthetic-based mud after drilling several horizontal wells, but the mud contained more than 10% low-gravity solids (LGS) that traditional solids-control equipment could not remove. The buildup of ultrafine solids was affecting mud properties and driving up dilution and mud costs.

SLB recommended offline treatment using its RHE-USE two-stage centrifuge system to clean the contaminated mud and remove ultrafines. After 70 hours of treatment, LGS levels were reduced from more than 10% to less than 3%, generating more than USD 90,000 in dilution savings and enabling successful mud recovery for the next well.
