Self-Healing Cement for Long-Term Safe Exploitation of Gas Wells

SLB worked with a global oilfield service company facing the challenge of ensuring long-term zonal isolation in gas wells during the conversion of a depleted gas field in northern Italy into a gas storage field. The project involved drilling 14 wells, and the customer needed reliable annular isolation to prevent gas migration, interzonal communication, casing corrosion, and potential environmental and health impacts.

SLB implemented its self-healing cement technology, an active cement system designed to restore isolation when exposed to hydrocarbons and to work across varying CH4 concentrations. The field-proven solution improved well integrity and reduced the likelihood of future intervention and remedial work, with the case study citing potential savings of 30 to 40 days of rig time plus avoided repair costs, while also lowering environmental risk.
