Scribe-Ridged Element Enables Bit to Increase ROP and Durability

SLB worked with Williston Basin Based Operating Company, which needed to drill a lower 8¾-in. section as quickly as possible through hard limestone interbedded with anhydrites and sand. The main challenge was finding a bit that could deliver high rate of penetration while still holding up for the full interval.

SLB recommended a customized 8¾-in AxeBlade bit with Axe SR scribe-ridged diamond elements strategically placed in the cone. This design lowered required WOB, improved cutting efficiency, and increased ROP to 99 ft/h, outperforming the baseline bit’s 89 ft/h while drilling 1,775 ft in the interval.
