Saturn Probe Delineates Contact in 12¼-in Wellbore in Low-Permeability Presalt Carbonate

SLB worked with a leading Brazil oil company to accurately define the oil/water contact in a low-permeability presalt carbonate reservoir in a 12¼-in deepwater well offshore Brazil. Conventional probes were only returning tight tests, and longer station times would have increased operational risk while making it difficult to obtain representative pressure measurements and fluid samples.

SLB deployed the 9-in Saturn 3D radial probe with the MDT modular formation dynamics tester to induce flow in the large-diameter wellbore and collect low-contamination samples for real-time fluid analysis. The probe successfully established the contact, confirmed water in the zone, and delineated the transition to the overlying oil zone, with valid samples acquired in 3.5 and 6.5 hours at mobilities of 0.03 and 0.06 mD/cP, reducing rig time and operational risk.
