A SLB Case Study
SLB worked with IGas Energy to drill two vertical onshore UK exploration wells through a highly interbedded 8½-in section that had a reputation as a “drillbit graveyard.” With no useful offset bit records from older nearby wells and evidence from a neighboring operator of low ROP and multiple bit runs, IGas Energy expected difficult drilling, short runs, and possible bit and BHA failures.
Using the DBOS drillbit optimization system, SLB analyzed offset mud logs plus sonic and gamma ray data to recommend EnduroBlade 360 rolling diamond element bits, then verified the best candidates with the DRS drilling record system. SLB’s solution cut Well 1 from 12 days to 6 days and completed the 997-m interval in two runs instead of three, while Well 2 dropped from 12 days to 3 days and drilled the 780-m interval in one run instead of four. Overall, the program delivered up to 75% less drill time, saved 6 drilling days, and improved ROP and bit durability in both wells.
