Rhino XS2 Reamer Enlarges Seven Horizontal Sections in Horizontal Deepwater Wells

Brazil Deepwater Drilling Company was drilling deepwater horizontal wells offshore Brazil and faced wellbore stability problems, including stuck pipe and the need for better clearance to run gravel-pack sand screens and manage equivalent circulating density. SLB was brought in to help underream an 8½-in horizontal section to 9½ in, improve hole quality, and provide a way to deactivate the underreamer at the final depth.

SLB recommended a customized bottomhole assembly using the Rhino XS2 full-cycle expandable reamer with a roller reamer below it. The setup was used to successfully underream seven horizontal sections in seven runs, averaging 1,100 m per section with no failures, achieving 18 m/h average ROP, and completing all deactivation cycles successfully while reducing stick/slip and wear.
