Rhino XC Underreams High-Inclination Well Below MWD Tool Placement

SLB worked with Brunei Shell Petroleum Company to underream a high-inclination, fish-hook profile section of the S-917 well in Seria, Brunei. The challenge was to enlarge about 1,030 m of 8½-in pilot hole to 9¼ in in one trip, while the well’s angle increased from 35° to 107° and the reamer had to be run below MWD tool placement.

SLB recommended the Rhino XC hydraulically activated on-demand reamer, which provided fast flow-based activation without a pumpdown ball and allowed full control of cutter block deployment. In a single run, the Rhino XC reamed 1,039.3 m from 2,030.3 m MD to 3,069.6 m MD in 28.29 hours, with circulation over 67.76 hours, eliminating the need for pumpdown device activation and successfully meeting the borehole enlargement objective.
