Rhino XC Reamer Enlarges Deepwater GOM Well in One Trip and 62 Hours

SLB worked with Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Drilling Company on a deepwater Gulf of Mexico well where pore pressure deviations, high mud weights, and equivalent circulating density made hole enlargement while drilling a challenge. The operator also needed an extended rathole for later coring BHA stabilization, all while trying to minimize costly extra trips.

SLB used the Rhino XC on-demand hydraulically activated reamer, along with related drilling services, to enlarge the 12 1/4-in section to 13 1/2 in and then deactivate the cutter blocks to drill additional 12 1/4-in hole for the coring section. The approach eliminated an extra trip, enlarged 1,551 ft in 49 hours at flow rates up to 950 galUS/min, provided a 538-ft rathole, and completed the 2,188-ft interval in 62.5 hours.
