Rhino XC Reamer and AxeBlade Bit Save 48 Hours and USD 240,000 in Tripping-Related Costs

PEMEX worked with SLB to drill an offshore exploratory well section through interbedded sand, salt, and shale while enlarging the hole from 12¼ in to 14½ in. The challenge was to complete a hole-enlargement-while-drilling operation and retain the flexibility to continue drilling or set a contingency liner without needing an extra trip.

SLB used the Rhino XC on-demand hydraulically actuated reamer with an AxeBlade ridged diamond element bit, supported by the IDEAS design platform, to complete the section in a single run. PEMEX was able to deactivate the reamer and drill to total depth, saving 48 hours and USD 240,000 in tripping-related costs, with zero NPT, no service quality incidents, and little wear on the tools.
