Repsol Uses HyperBlade Bit and PowerDrive Orbit RSS to Set ROP Record in Appalachian Basin

Repsol Oil and Gas USA, LLC worked with SLB to improve rate of penetration in the 8½-in lateral section of a Marcellus shale well in Pennsylvania. The challenge was to drill through soft shale more quickly without sacrificing bit durability.

SLB recommended a BHA using the HyperBlade hyperbolic diamond element bit with a PowerDrive Orbit RSS, designed to improve cutting efficiency and trajectory control. In the field, the solution drilled the section 38% faster overall across three wells, cut drilling time, and set a new basin and operator ROP record, including 415.1 ft/h on Well 5.
