Case Study: a large USA operating company replaces openhole logging with SLB Pulsar multifunction spectroscopy

Preview of the Large USA Operating Company Case Study

Replacing an Entire Openhole Logging Program for Shale Gas Reservoir with One Cased Hole Tool

SLB worked with a large USA operating company evaluating a complex shale gas reservoir in Pennsylvania. The customer wanted a more efficient way to determine mineralogy, kerogen content, and gas volume while avoiding the risks of running an extensive openhole logging program in an unstable shale wellbore.

SLB recommended its Pulsar multifunction spectroscopy service to provide stand-alone cased hole formation evaluation, including elemental concentrations, TOC, sigma, porosity, and FNXS from a single slim tool. The results closely matched the full openhole interpretation, including total porosity and gas volume, while streamlining well construction and eliminating openhole logging risks; SLB showed that Pulsar service could deliver the same breadth and accuracy of information as the prior openhole program.
