Case Study: Petronas Carigali boosts production and cuts water cut with SLB intelligent multizone completion

Production increased by 90% and water cut reduced to 20% in first three months, proving feasibility of reviving Malaysian brownfield

Petronas Carigali worked with SLB to address declining production at the Samarang oil field offshore Malaysia, where stacked reservoirs were partially depleted and suffering from high water cut. The challenge was to prove that marginal reserves could still be produced economically using a cost-effective completion approach, and the solution involved an intelligent cased-hole completion with multizone gravel-pack access.

SLB deployed a modular intelligent well completion inside AllFRAC cased-hole frac-pack screens together with MZ Alternate Path gravel-pack shunt-tube multizone packers across four unconsolidated sands. The result was a 90% increase in oil production in the first three months, water cut reduced to 20%, and savings of USD 3.2 million in rig costs, while also enabling better zonal control and planned expansion to additional wells.
