Precise Well Placement for Horizontal Campaign Increases Oil Production 30% in Bohai Bay

SLB worked with China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) to develop a marginal oil field in Bohai Bay that had significant stratigraphic and structural uncertainty, unknown gas/oil and oil/water contact levels, and limited well control. The company needed to drill nine horizontal wells, including one injector, while accurately landing the laterals in the best part of the reservoir.

SLB used EcoScope multifunction LWD service and PeriScope bed boundary mapper, along with a rotary steerable system, to guide real-time geosteering and improve drilling efficiency. All nine wells were successfully placed with 100% success, production came in 30% above target, drilling efficiency improved by 60%, and CNOOC saved USD 3.2 million off AFE.
